Here are the cutest picture day hairstyles for kids that won’t mess up by the time they’re ready to have their photo taken!
Hi friends,
School picture day is such a fun day for many kids! My daughter loves it because she gets to dress up and get an extra special hairstyle for the day.
There is one problem many of seem to face though. That’s keeping their outfit and hair looking nice until it’s time for photos to be taken. No fear, I have some great picture day hairstyles for kids that will stay put!
All of these hairstyles are super easy to do. No crazy twists, overlaps, zig zag patterns or anything. As long as you know (or are willing to quickly learn) a few basic braids, you’re golden!
School Picture Day Hair Essentials
First, let’s go over some essentials that you’ll want to have on hand to complete any of these picture day hairstyles for kids!
These are my ultimate go-to hair products for my kiddos! Plus, they’re everything you’ll need to complete any of these picture day hairstyles! You can see my entire school morning hair caddy (super convenient and helpful in the mornings) here on our post about other time saving morning routine hacks!
This spray bottle is like magic.. I’m serious! I’m still not quite sure how it works without batteries but it’s wonderful. It sprays a super fine, long mist. Best spray bottle out there – no question about it!
We bought these elastics at the beginning of last year. I was looking for the most bang for buck knowing that the price for the amount might mean they were lesser quality and easy to break. To my surprise, they’re really good! They’re thick and can stretched without snapping super easily. We often do hairstyles that require a lot of elastics and yet we still had elastics left over by the end of the year.
Bobby pins are a must for those little fly away baby hairs. Especially when we’re trying to keep hair in place long enough to make it till picture time!
If you don’t have a rat tail comb, I highly recommend getting one! These come in super handy for braided hairstyles. They make separating hair and getting nice clean lines super easy.
Lastly, elastic hair cutters! While you won’t need these in the morning while getting ready they will come in handy after school. These cutters make taking out hair elastics a breeze with no tears or pulled out hair. We love these!
Cute School Picture Day Hairstyles For Kids
1.
Here is a super basic and insanely easy hairstyle for starters! Combine two sections of hair from each side, create a normal braid and then flip it through the gap creating a cute twisted look at the top.
2.
Quick, simple and totally easy! This hairstyle is two small French braids using hair from the crown pulled into two small pigtails. The rest of the hair is left down. Option to curl the hair that’s down!
If you’ve never done a French braid, watch this video! This is a great explanation!
3.
Let me introduce you to a bubble pony! This look is super in style right now and extremely popular. It might look complicated but don’t let it fool you. This is super easy!
All you do is make a small pony at the top, gather two sections of hair under it. Pull them together to create another pony tail. Add the hair from the top pony and combine. Take your two thumbs and gently tug on the hair from the inside until a bubble effect is created. Repeat!
4.
Love this cute hairstyle! Split the the top section of hair in two. Create two dutch braids and stop them at the crown of the head. Braid those sections of hair as usual the rest of the way down. Gather the rest of the hair and make two small buns. Adding the rest of the normal braid, loop it over the buns. Add bows and viola!
5.
This hairstyle is giving me total rocker chick vibes! Fun and edgy. I totally love the colored strip too (if your school allows it)! For this half faux mohawk, all you need to do is create three small dutch braids on one side of the head. Stop them a little past the ear, add a tie and let the rest of the hair flow. Super fun!
6.
What a sweet and simple hairstyle! Gather hair the temples and split into three sections. Create a French braid by adding more hair into the braid. Use a rat tail comb to evenly add in hair as to get a clean line! Stop at the crown of the head and tie into a bun. Finish with a cute bow!
7.
Another fun variation of the bubble pony! You do the exact same thing as the single bubble pony except you split the hair in to at the beginning creating two ponies! My daughter frequently rocks this look!
8.
Here’s a super fun and unique hairstyle idea! To recreate this look all you need to do is start with two  dutch braids. Dutch braids are exactly like French braids except you add the hair under instead of over. Stop the dutch braids at the nape of neck and tie into two pigtails. Split each pig tail into two creating two more pigtails. Create a bubble pony on each four pig tails!
Again, if you know how to french braid, you know how to dutch braid! Here’s a great video that easily explains it though!
9.
Okay, this is what we call a bubble braid. Not to be confused with a bubble pony! Though I’m pretty sure they both named interchangeably, I think this one more closely resembles a braid. This one is extremely easy and almost looks like a dutch braid.
You’ll start by taking two splitting the hair down the middle. From there, starting on one side, create one small pony at the top. Under (or behind) that pony, create another small pony. Split the first pony in two. Drape the hair over each section and add another section to create another pony.
Repeat all the way down. It looks like she stopped the bubble braid at the nape of the neck and then continued down with a normal braid.
This is the exact video I watched to learn how to this hairstyle. Super easy!
10.
Another adorable half up half down hairstyle for the girlies who like to still have some hair flowing. This little girl has the start of two mini bubble ponies pulled into two small buns. Finish it off with two cute bows and you’re done!
11.
This is a go-to style for us on lazy days even. Using the top section of hair, create a French braid. Stop at the crown of the head and pull into a pony tail. This would look especially cute with curled hair for picture day!
12.
Another bubble braid idea to create one large bubble braid rather than two! Equally as cute!
13.
Why does this hairstyle give me faux mohawk vibes too? So stinkin cute! This little girl is showing one bubble braid stopped at the nape of the neck and pulled into a pony. I’m loving this as a picture day hairstyle for shorter hair!
14.
Here’s another quick and easy picture day hairstyle idea! This is simply two dutch braids combined and pulled into a single pony in the back. Add a bow and you’re done!
15.
Have you ever done an upside down French braid? It sounds complicated but it’s really not. All you do is start with a small section at the nape of the neck and work up. This cute hairstyle is two upside down French braids into two cute messy buns.
Here’s a great video that shows exactly how easy this is!
16.
This is a cute variation of the second picture day hairstyle idea! Do the exact same steps except add two small messy buns at the top instead of pony tails.
17.
One more simple variation of the hairstyle idea shown above except this two dutch braids rather than French braids!
18.
How cute are these two bubble braids pulled into two small pigtails? Such a great way to “dress up” a regular half up, half down pigtail look!
19.
Waterfall braid were all the rage back in 2012 and they’ve come back! Well.. were they ever really gone, anyway? This style is super fast and easy once you get the hang of it. It’s kind of hard to explain but you can watch a video on it to see how simple it actually is!
20.
Another easy variation of a hairstyle shown before. Goes to show just how many looks you can create with a few basic braids! I love the relaxed, messy look of these dutch braids pulled into a pony. Curling the hair is an adorable add on too!
21.
Similar to number 11 but still different! This is a single dutch braid into pony. I especially like the wrap around look of the pony to conceal the hair tie. It gives it a more put together feel perfect for picture day!
